The Distilleries |
|
Once, there have been 2,000 stills in operation in Ireland. Of the 28 working distilleries in 1885, only Bushmills Distillery in Co. Antrim is still producing Whiskey. It also maintains a nice Visitor Centre. Museums and visitor centres have also been established in the old Jameson Distillery in Bow Street, Dublin, also in Locke's Distillery in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath, and the Old Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork. The youngest Distilleries in Ireland, Irish Distillers Group in Midleton, Co. Cork, and Cooley Distillery in Riverstown, Co. Louth, cannot be visited. Apart from that, vestiges of defunct distilleries can be seen all over Ireland. I visited many of them and photographed what is left today. I also added Coola Mills in Kilbeggan to this page, an old mill with plans to convert into a Distillery and start producing Whiskey in the near future. |
